5 Computer Skills Every Nigerian Student Needs to Get a Job in 2025

Employers in Nigeria are increasingly looking for candidates with strong digital skills. Here are the five most in-demand computer skills and how to learn them in Owerri.

The Nigerian job market has changed dramatically over the past five years. Whether you are applying for a bank job, a government position, or a role at a private company, basic computer literacy is no longer optional — it is a requirement. Here are the five skills that will give you a real edge.

1. Microsoft Excel (Intermediate to Advanced)

Excel is the most widely used software in Nigerian offices. Basic knowledge (entering data, simple formulas) is expected. What sets candidates apart in 2025 is intermediate and advanced Excel:

  • VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP and INDEX/MATCH
  • Pivot tables and charts
  • Conditional formatting
  • Data validation

If you can build a working spreadsheet that answers a business question, you are already ahead of most applicants.

2. Microsoft Word — Professional Document Formatting

Most people can type in Word, but few know how to produce professional documents. Skills that matter include:

  • Styles and heading levels (critical for long documents and reports)
  • Mail merge (used in banks, schools and government offices)
  • Track changes and commenting (essential for collaborative work)
  • Table of contents generation

3. Email Etiquette and Productivity Tools

Knowing how to write a professional email, use CC and BCC correctly, and organise your inbox is surprisingly rare. Add Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 skills (Google Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Meet) and you immediately stand out, especially with companies that work remotely.

4. Data Entry and Typing Speed

Many entry-level and civil service jobs involve significant data entry. A typing speed of at least 40 words per minute with accuracy is the benchmark most employers look for. Practice daily — even 15 minutes — and you will reach this within a month.

5. Graphics Design (CorelDRAW or Canva)

The ability to produce simple graphics — a flyer, a social media post, a basic logo — is increasingly valuable even in non-design roles. CorelDRAW remains the dominant tool in Nigerian print shops and marketing teams. Canva is excellent for quick social media work and requires no prior design knowledge.
